Sikkim Tugs My Heart

Our vacation revolves around school vacations. Last October 2018 during Dussehra I had planned a trip to Darjeeling. Booked tickets but people discouraged saying Darjeeling is over crowded and has lost its charm.

So changed plan to Sikkim and re-booked rooms in Gangtok ( pro tip : Agoda allows free of cost cancellation upto a certain point ).

Took Yeshwantpur-Howrah Duronto Express. Love long train journeys. Can sleep as much as you want and read as much as you want. I had off-lined a few movies in Prime – and family were entertained. I saw Dhalapathi with San – after 26 years – what a kick-ass movie. Last time I saw Dhalapthi was in my 10th standard summer holidays – a 2nd show that too in a movie theatre near Railway station. To kill time because we were to board the Cochin-Howrah express at 3:00 AM in Coimbatore. We were going to Cuttack, Orissa. The Howrah Connection!

Started Sunday 11:00 AM Bangalore. Reached Monday 5:00 PM Howrah.

We took a break. There are lot of trains to NJP – New Jalpaiguri. Could have booked a train for 8:00PM but we have a 60+ Young lady and a 10ish Old man.

Took the train Tuesday evening 5:00 PM. It was going to Assam, we got down at Jalpaiguri Wednesday 6:00 AM. Brushed teeth and we get out of the station.

There is a Pre-paid Taxi stand. Best is to go via this – there are lot of these Mahindra and Tata Sumo. They charge around 250 or 300 per head. It takes 4 – 6 hours to reach Gangtok from here by road. Entire way the beautiful greenish Theesta river accompanies you. Lovely site.

We break for breakfast on one of the road side dhabas. Momos are there everywhere. They have a healthy vegetarian offering called Thakkali thaali.

There is a simple alternative now – if you are short of time can take a flight directly to Gangtok – a new Airport is opened now. Otherwise on Train + Road it takes 2 nights and 2.5 days from Bangalore.

Notice the folded 10Rs. note – all cars have this!

Thakkali Thaali

At border they check for Indian identity. Foreigners are not welcome in this state. They have to register separately and more paper work for them.

This is nothing for Bangaloreans. Last few kms took more than an hour.

 Day 1 :

Immediately after checking in – via the hotel – gave aadhar copy, passport size photos for registration. This has to be done before 4PM – so they can get a pass for visiting Nathula Pass ( India-China Border ). Also one day of the week this is closed. Please check before making travel arrangements.

Mahatma Gandhi Chowk.Vehicle free street. Lot of shops and eateries and trinket shops. Nice place to hang out. The place looked so good they could have held a concert there. Then I later found – public speakers are banned in this state. Sikkim is unique in many ways. Kept uncovering interesting facts about this wonderful state.

No Vehicles for almost a km section.

This is towards one end – half the road is for Pedestrians.

Day 2 :

We had to leave around 7:00ish. There is a ban on SUV kind of commercial vehicles from entering Gangtok during office hours – Being the capital + tourist place – it is seriously messed up.

There is a package. Nathula Pass, Baba Mandir and Tsongpo lake. Will be a full day.

Amit – our driver cum tour guide. These guys listen to Bollywood songs. We had a blast. Also Amit arranged for Jackets and gloves on rent for Rs.100 each.. so need not pack heavy duty stuff. These operators make some extra money on the side.

These trucks are from China. Trade happens via this pass.

The border. There is a treacherous( explained below )  walk + steps to the top

Treacherous walk. The altitude is (only) 14k Feet. [ Mt.Everest is 29k. Hence the only] The air is very thin. Since we were comfortably cruising in the car body did not adapt itself. So even if you take a few steps briskly Oxygen doesn’t refill quickly and you will get dizzy. Have to walk slowly and take deep breathes. Was weird at first.
Photos are banned at the top. We can see the checkpost and Chinese guards on the other side. Indian side has lot of paintings bragging about our deep cultural heritage. Chinese was very bare bones. Also there were no Chinese tourists. Developed new respect for our Armed forces. They had to be here in such an inhospitable climate. I shuddered thinking of Siachen.
Airtel does not work here. Only BSNL works. Note to self – Have to get a BSNL SIM card for travels. Has better coverage in remote locations.
Also my phone connected to Chinese Network and picked its Time. It is 2.5 hours ahead of us. Interesting fact – China does not have timezone! How do they manage?!

These 2 nut cases were from Jharkand. My kind of guys. Have to pull this off someday. We started making plans how to do a ride in our bikes. Fire lit in our hearts.

Baba Mandir

There is an interesting story of an enlightened Jawan. How this Jawan died in a water accident, he came in a dream of his friend and told the exact location to find his body. This shrine is in his honour.

Highlight here is at 12noon they play National Anthem and we all can sing together. San started crying here. It was an emotional moment.

Tsongpo Lake

It was just after 2pm and mist started enveloping the mountains.

Those Black Rocks are Yaks.

Day 3 :

You can stop any small taxi ( Santos or altos ) and they will give you a 7point package for Rs.1000 for half a day. We decided to visit 2 places in the package – wanted to drink Sikkim deep.

Ranka Monastery

It is not one of the famous monasteries. Picked this because this was uphill ( downhill if we go then we had to spend 1 hour to enter Gangtok on the way back).

It was totally deserted. Had green tea in a cafeteria inside the monastery compounds near parking. Richard Gere, Aamir Khan – lot of celebrities have visited this place. Also they were serving Chicken moms – What Sacrilege!?

I did not take pictures in their sanctum. No one was there, I just opened the main door and walked in. It was like in some KungFu movies. Sat and meditated and studied all their paintings and the Beautiful Buddha statue and so many Gods ( later found out who they are all – another blog post ). It was a moment I will never forget – it was so quiet and magical.

It started raining today. Was thinking of the Jawans at Nathula pass.

There is a large Prayer Wheel in the middle

Next stop was the waterfall. Banjhakari waterfalls

The climb to the falls is well setup with Gazebos, and statues etc. The waterfall was a little disappointment – as it is little – but the entire walk was well made. We had lot of fun at the falls too – it was like walking in a Japanese Movie Set.

Got back, had a late lazy lunch and then took the Ropeway that runs across Gangtok.

Next day we returned to Siliguri, over night bus to Kolkatta.

While researching on Sikkim found that the Northern part of Sikkim is untouched. The place where Teestha originates is a site to behold.

Sikkimese are very kind and loving people. They speak with a smile and are very courteous. There is no fleecing in the taxis or the shops. There is a kind of gentle peacefulness in this place. There were absolutely no foreigners. All prices are moderate and not inflated like in other Touristy places.

I sound like I am marketing but found a totally different state of mind among Sikkimese.

Also I saw lot of posters for an Organic state. They are banning pesticides throughout the state.

My kind of place.

Will be visiting again definitely. Not done with this cute little state of ours. Might even live here for a few years – who knows!

2018 Books Round Up

Here is my own Yearly Tradition!

Every year I start my first blog post on the books I read the previous year. Here is the list from 2010, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2017.

Here are the books that journeyed with me in 2018.

Tamil

  • Ponniyin Selvan – 1st Part

This is a must read for anyone who loves Tamil. My sister had gifted all the 4 parts and I had some false starts earlier. It was difficult to read at the beginning but the flow kicked in and I was reading at a good pace. The story and plot is intricate and thoroughly enjoyed it. Reading in one’s mother tongue is a totally enjoyable experience. 2019 planning to add more Tamil Titles to my reading list.

Fiction

  • Angels and Demons – Dan Brown

I enjoyed The Da Vinci Code and wanted a breezy read. So picked it up. Man it was exhausting. Story moves so fast and there is so much of information on European sculptures and churches. Good time pass. If I am going to visit the Vatican will re-read this book. Can enjoy the city.

  • Dawn of Wonder – The Wakening
The best book of 2018. Loved every moment of this. Eagerly waiting for the next part. It might be childish at places – but overall the book is brilliant. All the right elements are there – Adventure, Revenge, Love…
Productivity
  • Tribe of Mentors – Tim Ferris

I have lot of Gurus and one of them is Tim Ferris. Started reading it in a book shop for time pass, and ended up purchasing it. Full of tips, tricks, hacks from high achievers – entrepreneurs, musicians, olympic athletes. Loved the format of the book – classified into Healthy,Wealthy and Wise.

  • Talk like Ted

Read this book before our Annual Company wide Get together – Chaos 2018. Helped me focus my thoughts and keep my talk short. If you have a public speech coming up – read this book. Your audience will thoroughly enjoy your talk.

  • How to fly a horse – The secret history of Creation invention and discovery

It was a fun read. We are all creative and we should look to introduce creative methods / hacks in our day to day life and work – and somewhere a breakthrough might happen.

History

  • Innovators – How a group by Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution by Walter Isaacson
Journey from the first computer onwards. All the stories are there – Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Linus Torvalds, the pioneers of Chip Fabrication, how Internet came into being, Artificial Intelligence. If you are a worker of this new age ( Information Age ) – it is nice to know how this era came into existence.
Science Fiction

  • Iron Gold – #4 of Red Rising Series
This is a series I have been reading since 2016. The entire series is brilliant. Awaiting #5!
  • Ubik by Philip K Dick.

This is another classic from the author of Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep. A good portion of the story happens after the protagonists die. It is in an in-between state – where the living can still communicate with the dead. If you love Sci-Fi – this has to be in your reading list. Pure Awesomeness this is.
  • Hyperion by Dan Simmons

The plot is really good. 7 Pilgrims are on their way to Hyperion to their certain death. There is this creature – called the Shrike – The God of Pain – that does not obey Physics Laws and kills people left right and center. Each of the pilgrims narrate their story as they travel to the Shrike’s temple. One of the pilgrim’s – a professor is carrying his daughter who has a condition called Merlin sickness. Time travels backwards for her. It is very touching and this brought tears reading this part of the story.
  • Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons
I had to pick the 2nd part in the series. Was so sucked into the plot. How it all unravels. Highly recommend these 2 books.
  • Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Humans kill themselves – the entire species – ( yes we are a talented race and we are idiots ) – save for a Space ship and another solo BioScientist stranded in a capsule orbiting a planet in a far away galaxy. The BioScientist injects the planet with an advanced Virus which helps evolve Monkeys into Humans at a rapid pace. There are no monkeys apparently in that planet – but the virus infects spiders. It is a fascinating journey how the spiders take over the planet and their interaction with the Humans.
  • A big ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White

Loved the imagination of this author. In the future people cast magic spells and shields. Fascinating read. They should make a movie of this – would be a fun watch.

Diamond Age

Another master piece from Nepal Stephenson. Difficult read but the joy is in the grind like his novels. There is an AI book – at the center of this story which can teach a little girl everything and grows along with her. One has to wonder at the breadth of Neal Stephenson’s imagination – the elaborate lengths he goes to describe the AI book and how it works.

Biography
  • The House that Jack Ma Built

How did this short puny little man become this super successful entrepreneur. Did he get favours from Chinese Govt? How did he build his empire – not one but 3 – Alibaba, TaoBao, Ant Financials. His philosophy and what makes him tick. Fantastic read.
  • Notes of a dream
The first authorized Biography of AR Rahman. It was 1992, I was studying for my School Board Exam. People were watching Oliyum Oliyum in the TV. I was a monk during the last few months – so did not bother with the movies / music. I was studying in the nearby room and heard something new – sounded like an Ad – and it was Chinna Chinna Aasai. It was love at first hearing – and there was no looking back. Grew with AR Rahman’s melody and beats. It was a nice breezy read. If you love the man, his music – you should read this book.
  • One Life to ride – A Motorcycle Journey to the Himalayas

A ride to Himalayas is the ultimate bike ride. That too solo – a level above. And that too in an age before Internet and Google – multiple levels above. This is a story by a Dentist from Pune. I think this ride happened before Kargil war. Interesting read.
  • The Monk of Mokha
If you love coffee you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is about Yemeni coffee – how our hero – Mokhtar Alkhanshali – went from a doorman to the CEO of a company that imports Yemeni Coffee. His near death experience and single focussed mind. Irony is this was one of the last books I read in 2018 and immediately after that quit coffee temporarily starting this year – as an experiment to see if I can survive.
Spirituality
  • Awareness by Anthony De Mello

This book is written by a Jesuit Priest. Concepts are a mix of Eastern and Western philosophy. Superb light read. This might be the easiest and simplest Spiritual book I have ever read.
  • Teachings on the Bardo – Zurmang Gharwan Rinpoche

I picked this book for Rs.100 in a Sikkim Monastery. It has some crazy s*it in it. Sorry do not have any other way to describe this book. It is about the Bardo State – what happens when the soul transitions from Life to Death and Death to life. The sights a soul will see, the colors, the gods and devils that come to invite the soul to their lands, how to avoid the wrong choices that will make the soul be reborn as an animal or in lower dimensions – and which phase comes after how many hours / days all listed like a manual. Buddhism prepares you for death like no other religion. I have read the Tibetan Book of living and dead which is like a starter. The Bardo book goes very deep – it is the main course.
  • Direct Expressions – Namdrol Rinpoche

This is a free book you can pick it from ThekChen Choling in Singapore. A small but beautiful temple which is open 24×7. I was staying in a hotel nearby and ended up attending one of their English Prayer evenings – happens every Thursday evening. This Guru talks in a very simple manner and is very practical. A nice light weight introduction to Buddhism.
  • Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic – Osho

We only know about the controversies the media writes about Baba’s. They like to write sensational nonsense – that is what sells. Which the masses forward and laugh in Social Media. I had an incorrect impression of Osho earlier – not any more. His teachings, techniques were pretty good – more in tune with the Buddhist Philosophy I keep discovering. One of his meditation retreats the participants were to laugh all week, next week were to dig out the sorrow and bring it out, and third week spend in complete silence. Would love to experience this some day. As per the book Osho was poisoned by America – not sure if it is true – if it is – it is quite sad.
Thats all folks. Still having some unfinished books I have carried into 2019 – meet you in 2020 Jan with them.

My First Run without a Phone

If you are a runner you obsess over your accessories. You will understand.

If you are not a runner – let me explain to you, why we runners obsess over the accessories.

Even when you are lacing your shoes – the devil part in your brain will keep shouting – Do you really want to run? – it is cold outside, or why not take a break today or it is already 8:30 – sun is out in full force… blah blah – the chatter keeps going on and on – asking you to stop and relax in your sofa.

The devil should be quietened. Unless you are a Buddha for us ordinary mortals it is not possible. We need tools.

A Smartphone is perfect for this. There are podcasts, music, audiobooks. The devil needs to be fed with these – so you can run at peace.

My first smartphone was Samsung Galaxy S in 2010. My running took off with this. Used the stock wired headphones but it will hurt my ears. And it will keep slipping once sweat builds up. Had to keep adjusting it and never got into a good rhythm.

Second problem is where to put the smartphone. You put it in pocket it will jostle. I finally settled on a runner’s water pack carrier from Decathalon – with a pouch for holding phone and keys. This solved the problem.

Sangeeta saw me ogling on a Sennheiser sports headphone – an around the ear neck band kind – around Rs.4000 in a mall. Our combined salary that time was Rs.50,000 or so and Rs.4000 was a big luxury ( we were bootstrapping ADDA and we were taking the bare minimum to keep our home running ). She bought it for me.

My running improved really well. The headphones did not hurt my ear. Quality was too good. But the headphone lasted only a couple of years. The headphone jack became a loose conduct and it will only work in some weird angle.

My running will get affected as I stop to adjust the headphone jack. Red electric tape did not help. I switched to stock headphone and hated it.

Also I could not find this specific version of Sennheiser headphone. Much more expensive ones were only available. It was around 2014 I think – Amazon and Flipkart were getting popular, and I could find my kind of headphone online – and I ordered the next version of this headphone – and it lasted another couple of years.

In 2016 I upgraded to iPhone 7 which had no headphone jack. I ran with the dongle – but it had lot of loose connection issues and suddenly my perfect headphone became useless. Back to square one.

I knew I had to invest in a Bluetooth headphone. AirPods cost around Rs.10,000 – a cost of a good android smartphone. Bought a cheap Bluetooth Panasonic headphone. It will take some time pairing, and I have one more device to charge. It hurt my ears and will kept slipping. Sigh. Started hating the iPhone. I keep making fun of San as 1.5. ( First invest in half the price of something, find it to be good for nothing then invest in the real thing – 1.5x – I had committed the same mistake ).

Then San showed me her AirPods. Did a trial run with it and loved it. Invested in AirPods.

My running form was back. AirPods never slipped out. Pairing was easy. When I had to talk to someone a simple tap on the left and it will pause. Double tap it starts playing the audio book without me having to pull out the phone.

I got excited about the Apple Watch ( series 2 had just come out and I fell for the Nike version )  – thinking I can now ditch the phone and run just with the watch and AirPod.

But there was no audible watch app. Discovered this after purchasing the Apple Watch. Grr.
Went through the forums and saw so many people like me upset over audible. To me it was a no-brainer. Why the hell will audible not release a watch app.

The problem was not audible but Apple. Only iTunes music app had the ability to run in the background.

My hacker mentality went into over drive and researched how I can move the audio book from audible to iTunes music library – so I can play it from the watch.

This means I had to break the DRM of audio book and had to invest in crack software. Did not feel good about it. Felt let down again by Apple and kept running with the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. However – being an Apple fanboy – I forgave apple. Perhaps the hardware is not good enough to support too many background apps.
And apple released Watch OS 5 and hidden in this update was the freedom for 3rd party apps to function like iTunes – to stay in the background. And audible had released it’s Apple Watch version. Thank you Audible. [ Bad apple – so you already had a capable hardware but you were just lazy ]
It was already 8AM. I started syncing the audible book I was listening – Innovators – to the Apple Watch. It was excruciatingly slow. After almost 50 minutes it completed syncing. There is no cable to quickly sync stuff to Apple Watch – it has to happen wirelessly through Bluetooth I think.
I decided to go for a run still. Wanted to experience running without a pouch jostling around me – or someone interrupting my run with a call.
And finally did it – my first run without a Phone. It was bliss. It felt odd to run without the smartphone – but felt liberated from the shackles of the necessary devil in our lives – The Smartphone.
Life is good.

Speaking of SS

Memories fade fast. Capturing it while it is in my memory. I lost a dear friend. It is about him.

My friends will know his identity – not revealing his full name.

Hardwork and some amount of luck brought 60 of us to this Electrical Department in CEG. Half from Chennai rest from other parts of Tamil Nadu, and a handful from rest of the country.
Among them was this handsome young man with a cheerful personality who was an instant hit among all of us. He was in the same hostel floor as mine – 2 rooms apart.
In the English class we had to speak something in English ( duh ) – and based on how we spoke we were to be kept in A section or moved to B to be improved. SS said he is from this Great City called Pollachi near Coimbatore. We all had a laugh and he went on to sell his Pollachi.
I was put in B section and missed similar entertainment from SS in English class. However, SS entertained us almost daily in the bathrooms – with his songs as we waited or were in the adjacent bathrooms.
SS comes from a humble family. Visited his home after college – one of the memorable trips when we visited his home in Pollachi and went to Top Slip. 1998 Football Worldcup was in progress that time and we were up late watching some game. He had made his mother make bhel poori – he said his mother made the best in the world – which was true – she used Coconut as one of the ingredients – and we enjoyed the love and affection from his sweet family. His father was a retired ( or then retiring ) Principal from a Polytechnic college.
SS was going to do his Master’s. A brilliant mind and I thought he will become a professor. He will grasp the concepts very well and explain to us in a clear manner.
Back to college days – he was the only person who everyone trusted – hostelites, day scholars, ladies of our batch, the professors, seniors, juniors. He will always go around with a smile, helping others, pulling someone’s legs, always ready to give company when we call him for a night show movie in Devi or Satyam, and on Friday’s dutifully going to Beasant Nagar AstaLakshmi Temple.
He was the Class-Rep and one of the professors – forgetting his name – will give the question paper to SS a day before the exam, and we were to write the exam without any supervision by him the next day – and turn in the answers. He trusted us, and more than that he trusted SS. SS was in lot of pressure but he stood his ground and did not reveal the Question paper.
He was the chief organiser for any movies ( once a year we went to see Kamal Hasan movies as a whole batch. Don’t remember if we went on Year 3 and 4 ). Also the chief organiser for the study tours! His hand was always there in any event.
In our final year – one of our Professors passed away. And it was SS’s idea to start a trophy in his name.
We had an intra department sports tournament. We had ladies cricket – could be the first time ever in CEG’s history. SS was the umpire for one of the games between and our batch ladies and our junior ladies. Our batch was losing. There was a clamour to abandon the game and restart / continue the next day.  Boy what a shouting match it turned out to be. Both the parties hounded him and he postponed the game. And our batch lost the next day.
We all graduated and there was still an unfinished work – of the year book. Few of us had started work during the last days of college – but we never got around to complete it and we all went home.
SS was cooling his heels before flying to US for his Masters. I was waiting for my job to start. He temporarily relocated to Coimbatore to one of his relatives home for a couple of weeks to complete the year book. It was one of the most memorable times I had with SS – joking, reading, rewriting and we completed the year book and sent them for printing.
Couple of years later, when I went to do my MS and had just started my broke student life – he invited us to San Jose that December 2001(?) – he had just started working with Intel that time. He hosted us in his brother’s house and took good care of us. He drove us around in his brother’s car, paid for all our meals in good Indian restaurants – we even got into an accident luckily no one got hurt – but the car took a good hit.
He relocated to India around 2004 I guess. 2006 when we relocated met him at Bombay Post on Old Airport Road, Bangalore – a good hotel in the now infamous and shut down Carlton towers that had a fire accident. His office was just 2 blocks away and we had a nice lunch meeting.
He was driving a Hyundai automatic. Ever practical guy that he is. He had lot of tips for freshly relocated NRIs.
He was the anchor of all our lunch meets. The probability of meeting goes up whenever he says he will attend. The last lunch meet with him happened almost a year back.
We were in the middle of organising our 20th reunion – ( we graduated in 1998 ). And as usual SS was the anchor of this event. He used to forward lot of PJs, Health Tips and husband/wife jokes – and someone said – stop forwarding these we need to focus on the reunion.
He said ok and that was the last message he sent that night. Next day early morning he had a severe cardiac arrest and couldn’t be saved. It was his birthday the next day.
Anyways life has to go on. We are going ahead with this event – with a hole in our hearts. Will gather more of his stories and update here. His son is 5 years and daughter is less than a year now. Will present this to them someday – they should know the great guy their dad was – who we all loved dearly.

Rocket Singh Salesman of the year movie – bad bad bad

Yesterday happened to see Rocket Singh Salesman of the year movie.

Let me get the good out of the way.

There is corruption everywhere. Wrong decisions, inflated bills are accepted with a bribe to get the sale. Bad for the company, bad for the industry, bad for the end consumers. This segment is the only good part of the movie.

Other than this – I was squirming while watching the movie.

Bad 1

Misusing company’s (AYS corporation) resources while building his company ( Rocket ). They do justify in the movie that our hero is insulted as zero by AYS’s boss. Rocket’s employees will use AYS’s van for transporting equipments, they will work during the night and sleep during the day in the office – while drawing salary from AYS.

Bad 2

Rocket team had the honour not to divert existing leads that come to AYS. However, they dug out the old leads which have declined AYS. AYS would have spent lot of marketing dollars, WoM to generate leads. Also the reasons for declining AYS might have been – lack of budget that time, not a good champion at the other end, no requirement etc. Rocket cannot steal the old leads of AYS.

Bad 3

This pissed me off. The whole bane of Indian Startups – undercutting to get a business. Rocket’s differentiators – undercut AYS and also offer 24×7 Support – which is not sustainable. This kills the industry as it creates unreasonable expectations.

I would have appreciated Rocket if they had charged more than AYS’s support to offer 24×7 and quick turn around time and convinced the customer – which is harder to sell. How could they sustain at cheap rates and give quality support? [ If your employees draw salary from another company – AYS – may be. ].

Undercutting, giving cash back, giving discounts, throwing freebies – it is the easy way to sell – and is not sustainable. Company will lose eventually. Customers will lose. The Industry dies.

Selling a quality product at a price it deserves is the hard way to sell – which is sustainable. Customers will win. Company wins. The industry they both operate will thrive.

Rocket Singh is a bad movie for budding entrepreneurs.

1. Thou shalt not steal your existing employee’s resources.
2. Thou shalt not steal your existing employee’s leads
3. Thou shalt not capture business by undercutting your competitor at unsustainable rates.

Some good lessons where there though

1. Say no to corruption – everywhere – even in Private sector
2. Business is about People.

My only prayer is hope these wrong lessons are not picked up by young entrepreneurs and they ask these questions before mis-using existing company’s resources or starting a race to the bottom death match with their competitors.

I wish there is a Rocket Singh – II. And the movie continues where it left so we know how Rocket manages the low costs he is giving.

10k after a long time

I ran 10K last on 06th August 2017.

After that the maximum I touched was 8k – rarely. Most of my runs were 4 5 or 6 kms.

Partly because I did not find any good audio book. I fondly remember the days when I used to run with Three Body Problem, Ender’s world – all kept me on my toes ( literally ).

Summer heat, difficult audio books ( Ubik, Diamond Age ) – weren’t helping.

Today my running friend – Akshay – joined me. This is how usually runners talk

He : How much today?

Me : Trying 10. 2 down. How about you?

He : 21 yesterday, planning 10 today.

Me : Wow. Lets do it.

I switch off my audio book. I know Akshay tells Ohm while he runs. When I dont listen I keep telling Om Ma Nee Pad Me Hum.

I think about these mantras. They are powerful and slowly chip into your soul.

2 or 3 rounds around the lake, we run across his son. 14 year old – he comes with us for a full round as we talk about cricket. He is a fast bowler. We egg his ego. But he drops off after a round.

I complete my 10k. Satisfying run.

I do my stretches and lie on the grass spread eagled. It starts drizzling. It was magical.

Here are a few photos of the lake – It is in AECS layout. Mud track. Trees are growing up well.

A huge Thank you lake activists. You have no idea how much I love this paradise you guys have helped create.

Sufi you are an illegal immigrant as of today

BBMP – The corporate body in charge of Bangalore – which keeps roads pot hole free, streets free of trash, lakes without foam, keeps underpasses dry during monsoon – was able to carve out free time to brainstorm and come up with a new law – to regularize pets.

BBMP has put up a list of allowed breeds in Apartment Complexes. Sufi who happens to be a Beagle is now an illegal immigrant as of today. Sufi, Trump also hates you now.

And it is not over – there is a new rule now – only one pet per apartment is allowed. And Indies are not in the list either. Good luck Carbon ( Sufi’s friend living in a nearby Apartment ).

To tackle pet breeders they justify. I tell this to Sufi and she does a face palm with her cute paws.

Instead of punishing all pet lovers – why can’t they legalize and regularize pet breeding. Right now it is done illegally and the poor animals are exploited. The mothers are made to give birth every 6 months for 14 years at a stretch and are reduced to machines and then let loose on the street – and not knowing how to fend for themselves – die a miserable death.

BBMP’s intention – I appreciate and am grateful – is right. But their law will just be like the trash clogging the storm water drains – is of no use and will cause more problems for everyone.

This law is not going to curb pet breeders. Now they will give you an additional service. Apart from selling a puppy out of their puppy mill – for an additional charge will get you a license. More money for breeders, the officials. Ka-Ching.

This reminds me of how the IT Department went after Angel Investments in Startups.

Startups get investment on the valuation suggested by the founders ( ahemm.. on a huge discount ). This is not an income to the startup. Even a 3rd grader knows this.

One wily politician ( no names here – dont have energy to fight lawsuits ) – used this route to park his ill-gotten money as investment in fictitious companies.

The IT Department was asked to go after such investments. Now that everything is automated – the IT Department officials did a Select-All, Mail Merge and sent threatening letters to all Startups who raised Angel Investment – to treat this investment as income – and so you should pay tax. Some – like us – have used up all the money in building the business. Some had shut down and the founders had moved on.

All the Startup founders collectively face palmed, panicked and had one more reason to lose sleep upon.

Startups now engaged their Auditors – who relished such a battle – replies were sent, demands to appear on such and such date was made, personal appearances were made on behalf of the startup by the auditor ( everything billed to the Startup once again – with GST mind you ).

And the wily politician? Oh they have the means and resources to tackle such notices.

Being the victim of 2 such laws ( Pet Law and Angel Tax ) – cannot help laughing at the situation.

So what will happen to Sufi?

I am not too worried. Sufi is backed by Beagle Brigade. The group which rescued such Beagles from the clutches of Laboratory which used Animals for testing cosmetic products. I am confident they will get Beagle included in the list.

My real worry is – why is BBMP burning its midnight oil on such Pet laws. Monsoon is charging up as we speak and Bangalore is going to become one big messy pool. The road to our apartment complex has been dug up on the left for GAIL gas pipe line and a drainage on right. Not yet relaid. It is a muddy mess with vehicles getting stuck. When it rains what will happen?

Sigh.

Bloggers Block!

My last post was in January 2018 and it was an effortless post – just a book round up of 2017 books I read.

From then to now lots have happened.

Rajinikanth has announced his entry into politics.

Flipkart got acquired by Walmart.

CSK won the IPL tournament.

BJP struggles to win

Trump is not yet impeached.

Spectre Bug

Bitcoin went up and down and out of news now.

And yet it all went unobserved by me.

So my future self on a rebirth who somehow discovers this blog – or an alien race researching on why the Earth imploded – a big part of history will be missing.

My future Self and aliens – I am resuming my blogging.

Unblocking the Bloggers Block – let my ideas flow and live in the ether.

2017 Books Round up

My first blog post of every new year is on the books I crunched in the past 1 year. Here is the list for previous years – 2010, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2017
Compared to other years, this year I had shunned Social Media – zero posts in FB. Few marketing retweets in Twitter. TV was shunned already.  I had more time to read books than previous years – inspite of a hectic 2017
Here are the books I crunched – classified by Genres :
Science Fiction

1. Death’s End – Cixin Liu

This is the 3rd and final part of the Three Body Problem. Science Fiction from China. In the earlier part Earth Civilization is preparing for an attack. In this part they are attacked. There is one funny piece where a scientist falls into a Black hole. However his wife does not get insurance, because he can never be declared dead – he is still falling into the black hole and is never dead theoretically!
2. Dark Matter

Multi verse. Nice racy read.

3. Old Man’s War

I think Netflix is making a TV serial of this. Interesting plot.

4. Xenocide

3rd and concluding part of Ender’s world. I read the first part in 2012 or 2013. While running around the synthetic track of a Sports Authority of India’s training ground in Kandivali, Mumbai.

Little did I know that this book – Xenocide was the actual book the author wanted to write – but it was difficult to consume, so he built up a nice hollywoodish thriller ahead of it – got me hooked so had to read this difficult book.

At times it is painful – how the genetically mutated humans who actually have a OCD condition – but are made to believe they are god spoken and they purify themselves by tracing the wood grains on the floor.

Another place one alien – hunter – gives his life to prove they are independent and not under the influence of another alien virus.

Interesting plot. Have to go deep to appreciate these questions. This book is not for the faint of heart. You should be a hardcore science fiction fanatic to live through this book.

But worth it.

5. We are Legion

A brain of a cryogenically frozen guy is Bob is revived and made the brain of a spaceship. He or It  escapes from Earth which is at the verge of getting destroyed because of a nuclear war.

I get introduced to the concept of a Van Neumann machine. A self replicating machine. Bob creates more Bobs and spaceships. They go on to explore the universe.

They discover a humanoid species and Bob decides to help a smart kid ( Bob christens him Newton ) against gorillas. Simultaneously few Bobs go to Earth and try to rescue the remaining living humans.

Was not boring at all and enjoyed the story and plot.

6. Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep

Sci Fi Classic. I had actually started this book but forgotten. In between a year had passed. This is a complicated book. At times was engrossing at times was torture.

7. The Fold

Nice racy read. Did not get boring. Kind of predictable. The hero is a a high IQ guy living in hiding as an English Literature who is called in to study a high secret science project – and shit hits the fan.

Fiction

8. Sputnik Sweetheart
You can read any book of Haruki Murakami – his prose just flows and you will never get bored.

9. Aunts aren’t gentlemen – PG Wodehouse

My first PGW. Funny. Actually my first PGW was watching a play based on PGW’s story – my birthday treat in 2016. After that found this book lying in our house and started reading it. Like the slow gentle pace and how the plot ravels and unravels.

10. Under the dome – Stephen King

There is a Netflix TV series. I started watching it, got hooked and then switched to this book.  Very interesting plot. In the end he had thanked his team – of course there was a team who thought about the details. How to escape from a situation where there is no oxygen, and how they survive by breathing from a car tyre. The utter madness of a psychotic killer. It is all there. Going on a long vacation with lot of time to kill – pick this book. Never a dull moment.

11. Scion of Ishvaku

Loved it. Read Amish Tripathi if you haven’t.

12. Sita

Part II. Loved it too. Waiting for the next in series – Raavan.

13. IQ84

Donald Trump is president. This book is very close to the hilarious reality we are all getting into.

I had actually made a mistake in downloading this book in kindle. There is a book with the same name by Harukki Murrakami – thought was getting that book and ended up getting this – no complaints though.

Felt like reading one of those typical Hollywood movies.

14. Remains of the Day – Kazuo Ishiguru

Heard that this author won a Nobel Prize in Literature. So got his best work.
Superb prose and narration. Story just flows. Quite a simple and nice plot. Must read. Some good questions are raised. What if you toiled all your life on something and which turned out to be a failure – are you a failure or since you toiled dutifully it is not. Don’t know either.

Biography

15. There are no short cuts to the top

Book is about a high altitude mountaineer who has climbed all 8000+ Ft peaks – 14 of them are there – without an oxygen tank. Very interesting and inspiring.

16. The man who knew infinity
The biography of the greatest Indian Mathematician – Srinivasa Ramanujan. Must read for Mathematicophilles.

17. Mossad

“No way” I was telling to myself reading some of the exploits of Mossad. Egypt Premier’s son in law was on Mossad’s pay roll. They got early warning of the attack of Israel by Egypt and coalition. It was like a thriller – not a good book to read before sleeping.

Classics

17. Adventures of Tom Sawyer

What a masterpiece. Had only read the abridged version in school earlier. There was no iPhone or XBox with Tom Sawyer. He entertained himself with a tick in class or a dead cat. Lovely writing. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It felt like an alien universe – Tom Sawyer’s world – compared to the electronic era we live in now.

Spirituality

18. Man’s Search for Meaning

Just read this book. It is not spiritual or religious even though I have classified it under Spirituality.

It is about a Jewish Psychiatrist who survived the Holocaust. He could observe the Human Mind when it was going through the greatest distress – they did not know if they will be alive the next hour. However Viktor Frankl, the author survived – and lived to tell his tale.

Has practical application for life.

19. The Prophet

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Each chapter is a prose like this. Full of deep advises and insights. On every aspect of human life. Can keep visiting this book. Very deep and enjoyable.

20. Little Prince

This was gifted to Prithvi by his Maashi. It is a small book – and we all ended up reading it. Very beautifully written and makes you think – on the mad rat race we are all running.

21. Adiyogi

There are lot of stories of Shiva and takes the goal of enlightenment up a notch – to go into nothingness. I did not quite get it – perhaps I might some day. Must read for Isha fans.

Science

22. Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are

Some of the cutting edge research on Animal psychology proves how much we still do not know. Crows can solve complex puzzles a Chimpanzee can solve ( supposedly the 2nd smartest after humans ) – with a lot smaller brain and just a beak. The more the scientists dig the more they are in awe of the wonderful co-habitants of this planet.

As a former meat eater I feel ashamed to have unknowingly participated in using the animals for food – these are sentient creatures – who can feel love and pain – they deserve a better life than the ones we humans are subjecting them to.

23. Sapiens

If you pick up this book, read this as if you are an alien reading about the Human Race. Can appreciate this better.

The author, an Israelite talks highly of Buddhism and how it is the most practical of all religions today. Unfortunately the author does not talk much on the Indian culture which evolved over a greater period and has contributed to the human civilisation a great deal.

Productivity

24. The Advantage

There were some good learnings from this book which I believe we implemented in ADDA.

25. Rich Dad Poor Dad

Wish I had read this book 20 years back. .

26. Tools of Titans

Damn you Tim Ferriss. You know how to take money from me year after year. This book has 3 sections – Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. Great tips and it is one of those books you can readily put things into action.

27. Hard things about Hard things

Running a Startup? Drop everything and read this first. Very thought provoking and has some good tips and tricks.

28. School of Greatness

Had some good advises – some of them I follow already so was nothing new – but a good re-affirmation book for me.

29. High output Management

This book was heavily quoted in Hard Things about Hard things – so had to read it. Had good tips in running an organisation. Need for training and orientation – which something we were not focussing much on.

30. Slip Stream

Another dimension / advantage of getting into “Flow”. Good insights.

31. Only the Paranoid Survive

Another must read for any Startup Founder. How Intel prepared itself to move from a Memory company to a Chip Company – how they read the market conditions and did a course correction which saved Intel.

Medium – you disappointment.

Imagine.

A place without the Social Media noise.

A place to go to read what the great minds are thinking.

A place without Advertisements or Clickbaits.

That place was Medium. It is no more.

But isn’t Medium a business?

It is a business at the end of the day. There is no free lunch. Medium has to pay its staff. The investors need an exit.

But shouldn’t knowledge and thoughts be free?

Human Kind has progressed with the free flow of knowledge. Whenever knowledge was dammed, chaos reigned. Human progress slows down. When knowledge is shared, we grow by leaps and bounds.

Tesla made all its patents open source. So other electric car manufacturers can develop on it. Volvo invented the seat belt and opened up its patent. They saved millions of lives.

In contrast.. Apple and Google and Samsung – the Mobile Phone giants are patenting the smallest of idea – and stiffling innovation in Mobile phones – so no new ideas can come to life – except the giants.

Or like India not having access to  Cryogenic rocket technology – which the Superpowers hold it within themselves and so we still haven’t been able to launch a human to space.

Venkat, you got fooled so dont blame Medium

Agreed I misled myself. I believed Medium to be this utopian watering hole I go to read about Productivity Hacks, Entrepreneurs, Cancer Survivors. I love(d) Medium.

But it all has come to an end. Medium is now forcing me to pay to access this content.

Can’t you just pay the 5$ a month?

Yes, I can. Mostly I will. Medium is where I turn for inspiration or book ideas or stimulate my mind and curiosity.

So what is Venkat’s problem?

If writers start writing for money – will it not again get into the clickbait territory. The writers get paid based on the claps they get. So they will start writing for more claps. What gets claps? – Sensational stuff. Things that appeal to the darkest part of the human mind. Things that make you say eew and aaw.. and yet you will read. Things like the accident on the road when a crowd surrounds it – you want to peek in.

I just described above – the Tabloid Newspapers, The News Channels, The Articles on Social Media

Medium was free of all that. Because writers wrote freely with no monetary carrot dangling in front of them.

The whole concept of Medium is shattered.

So what is the solution?

Medium was started by the co-founder of Twitter – Evan Williams. I can bet it does not take billions of dollars to develop and run Medium. Evan Williams could have just sustained single handedly from a fraction of his annual income.

Heck. If Medium had just asked for donation like Wikipedia – people would have paid.

There are so many sites still running – Ad free – Wikipedia, Craigstlist, Angelist..

Sigh.

You Devil called Money. We hate you but we cannot live without you.

Here is the life story of a speck
